We
are
pleased to have Susan Wise Bauer and her mother Jessie Wise come as a
Keynote Team to our 2009 Conference.
They are celebrating their 10th anniversary of The Well-Trained Mind, a book that
shows parents how to educate their children according to the classical
tradition. When Susan and Jessie wrote The Well-Trained Mind
(first published in 1999 and the 3rd Edition due in Spring 2009], they
recommended, in their opinion, the best
books and curricula available at that time. Since that time they have
each written their own books, which were written to fit precisely
within the framework laid out in The Well-Trained Mind.
Susan Wise Bauer
Susan's
most
recent book for Norton, The History of the Ancient World: From
the Earliest Accounts to the Fall of Rome (2007) is the first in
a four-volume
series providing a narrative world history. Her previous book, The
Well-Educated Mind: A Guide to the Classical Education You Never Had
(2003), is a guide to reading the classic works of fiction, poetry,
history, autobiography, and drama. Norton also published The
Well-Trained Mind: A Guide to Classical Education at Home (with
co-author Jessie Wise); originally published in 1999, this bestselling
guide to education in the classical tradition was revised and updated
in 2004. Susan has written a four-volume world history series for
children, The Story of the World, for Peace Hill Press.
Volume 1, Ancient Times, was published in 2002 (revised
edition 2006); Volume 2, The Middle Ages, in 2003
(revised edition 2007); and Volume 3, Early Modern Times,
in 2004. The final volume, The Modern Age, was published
in 2006.
Susan is also a contributing editor to Books & Culture and a
frequent contributor to Christianity Today.
Susan's
parents taught her at home for most of elementary and middle school,
and all of high school; she entered college at seventeen as a
Presidential Scholar and National Merit finalist, and finished her B.A.
in five semesters with a major in English, a minor in Greek and a
summer spent studying twentieth century theology as a Visiting Student
at Oxford. She went on to earn a Master of Divinity from Westminster
Theological Seminary in Philadelphia, where she added Hebrew and
Aramaic to her languages. In 1994, she also completed the M.A. in
English language and literature at the College of William and Mary in
Virginia; her concentrations were in translation theory,
seventeenth-century devotional poetry, and Psalm paraphrase in the
Tudor period. Since 1994, Susan has taught writing and American
literature at William & Mary, where she also received her Ph.D. in
American Studies, with a major field in the history of American
religion.
Susan was born
in 1968, grew up in Virginia, and was educated at home by pioneering
parents, back when home education was still unheard of. She learned
Latin at age ten, worked as a professional musician while still in high
school, and wrote three (unpublished!) novels before she turned
sixteen. Since then, she has toured with a traveling drama group;
galloped racehorses at a Virginia racetrack for spending money; taught
horseback riding; worked in ghostwriting and newspaper ad sales;
learned enough Korean to teach a Korean four-year-old Sunday school;
and served as librarian and reading tutor for the Rita Welsh Adult
Literacy Center in Williamsburg. Susan and her husband now live in
rural Virginia, where Peter serves as the minister of a
nondenominational church. They have three sons and a daughter.
Jessie Wise
Jessie is
a home education consultant, speaker, and writer; my recent appearances
include workshop sessions for home school conventions in Virginia,
California, West Virginia, North Carolina, and elsewhere. She is also
the co-author of The Well-Trained Mind: A Guide to Classical
Education at Home (with co-author Susan Wise Bauer), published by
W.W. Norton in July, 1999. Until her consulting load grew too heavy,
she tutored privately in English and mathematics and served as the
principal of a private cooperative school for two years, a position
which included both administrative duties and the teaching of
elementary classes on all subjects. Jessie taught three children at
home from elementary school through high school; all three completed
college degrees, and two went on to complete graduate degrees as well.
Before educating her own children, she taught preschool at a private
school in New Orleans. Over the years she also taught second, fourth,
fifth, and sixth grade classes at public schools in three states;
Virginia, Tennessee, and Louisiana. For a short period, she also taught
the children of international hospital workers in Haiti. She is
currently at work on her own home school book — the story of her
journey into home education.
Jessie
graduated magna cum laude from Carson-Newman College in
Tennessee in 1959 and was a member of the Mortar Board Honor Society
and of Pi Kappa, the national honor debate fraternity. Since then, she
has taken courses for state teacher certification at Tulane University
in New Orleans, the College of William & Mary in Virginia, and the
University of Virginia. She has completed teacher workshops on learning
disabilities, and has worked with dyslexic students. She also been
trained in school administration (courses taken in Pensacola, Florida).
Recently, Jessie completed a series of seminars in parenting skills
which she uses as a resource when advising home-schooling parents and
students.
She grew up in isolated rural Virginia,
raised by elderly relatives who were subsistence farmers. They had no
indoor bathroom and traveled to town only twice a year — for Christmas
presents and spring shoes. Jessie was the valedictorian of her 1955
high school class, and the only girl to go on to college. She met her
husband Jay in college, and taught school for six years while he went
through his medical training. After he finished medical school, Jay
went into the Navy. Over the next few years we lived in New Orleans,
Tennessee, Maine, Virginia, Boston, and Puerto Rico. They also spent a
short time at the Albert Schweitzer Memorial Hospital in Haiti, and
decided to sponsor the education of two Haitian boys (both are now
American citizens and successful professionals). In Boston they adopted
their youngest daughter, a biracial child. When Jay got out of the
service, they moved back to the Virginia farm where Jessie grew up. Jay
began a rural general practice and they started homesteading — they
raised livestock, killed their own pigs, and had an enormous garden,
while she taught their three children at home. Over the years they have
given a temporary home to numerous people — including a South American
doctor who wanted to learn English, and ex-CIA officer who needed a
place for his entire family, ex-flower children, and students of all
kinds. Now that her children are grown, she serves as an elder in her
local church, assists her husband in his second career (as an artist!),
and helps educate her grandchildren.
